The Basque Country as a cultural region (not to be confused with the homonyms Autonomous Community of the Basque country and Pays Basque) is a European region in the western Pyrenees that spans the border between France and Spain, on the Atlantic coast. In the Basque nationalist conception, it comprises the autonomous communities of the Basque Country and Navarre in Spain and then the Northern Basque Country in France. These limits are based on historical borders, and do not correspond exactly to any cultural area.
It is the homeland of the Basque people, their language, culture, and traditions, though in some areas, particularly southern Navarra, most natives do not consider themselves Basque. Over the centuries, elements from both Spanish and French culture (including the respective languages) have also influenced the region’s culture.
